We are using grasshopper more and more. Parts of Aviva were done in grasshopper, simply through what was out at the time is was more GC and Rhino based. I think grasshopper has already gained credible abilities in industry. It also seems to be the tool of preference these days.
We used a combination of Rhino and Generative Components. When we first developed this model GC was only in BETA phases and its was pre-grasshopper release. We developed a lot of generative adaptable models and scripts that not only built the shape but populated the wire frame surface lines (UV lines - that where all pure geometries) of the shape. Excel was used to drive the panel openness in a feedback loop based on the environmental conditions and air handling units within. Further centre lines models and scripts translated the information to the contractors, they uploaded our data and wrote their own Macros within SolidWorks to input their modelled parts onto our geometry setout files.
Hi Jerrod,
Thanks. I am glad you liked it.
I have made de design available at Thingiverse free of charge www.thingiverse.net/thing:2069 There you can download the cutting sheets to produce one of your own and read about the design. I would be pleased if everyone follow the conditions.
The material is polypropylene sheets with 1mm or less and I did not use any adhesive or glue. All the pieces are numbered and they connect one to each other. The linkage mode is completely different from that of IQ lamp from Holger Strøm, but essentially that is also a reciprocal network of pieces: This is why one can build whatever shape with this system.
Hope you enjoy it and let me know if you build one.
