algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi everybody! I´m a beginner and I`m looking for a possibility of a hexagonal paneling like a box paneling with morph geometry (here the tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUqiXaF9w3A). So, I want to put my rhino-prepared hexagonal geometry into a grid (consisting of hexagonal "bounding boxes"). And to apply all it on a rhino surface. Uff, hope you`ll understand my "beginner" problem description. Is it possible or are there similar ways to do it? Thanks!

Hi Evert! That`s not the best sketch probably but I´ll try to explain. I need a 3D grid of hexagonal bounding boxes. I whish, that I could FIRST build some hexagonal geometry in rhino and THEN apply it to such a grid in GH, just like in that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUqiXaF9w3A) tutorial, but hexagonal. And the whole grid schould be applyable to some other free surface which I`ve also already built in Rhino. Sorry, Idon`t know many GH expressions and try to explain it somehow. Like this. Thanks!
Hi El Ger,
If your image attached to your post above, is the geometry you want to achieve, then I suggest you use this as the base geometry to built from, this approach would give you a closed seams solutions.
If what you're after is more like this then you could use the boxmorph approach. I haven't got the definition right now, I used to create the xample above, I can post it later if you want to have a look at it.
There is another way that uses the boxmorph approach and the 1:sqr(3) rectangle, as shown on fig. 9 of this paper. I've been looking at it in the last few days, but haven't had a chance to write a blog post, sorry!

Thank you for your replies. The first example you`ve posted goes in the right direction. It´s just that the hexagons are still flat. I need them to be 3D geometries. If you read below, I think Marios understands my problem. I need some time to figure it out, because I`m a beginner and still learn from the simple tutorials.

I believe you should tackle your problem the other way around. And by that I mean that you should build your hexagonal geometry in GH (dependable for example on the vertices of the hexagons). Hexagonal bounding boxes are not available as far as I am aware, nor they going to be helpful in this case. A proposed methodology should look like this:
1. tessellate a surface through hexagonal tiling
2. Have two or more cases in GH (geometrical configurations closed/open) depended on the hexagons
3. Cull /dispatch the hexagons according to a factor
4. Apply each case to the desired hexagons

I think you`ve really understood my problem. It sounds logical, but right now I can´t do all this steps by myself, because I´m too new in GH. I`ll try it later after I`ve learned more tutorials. By the way, are there some similar tutorials contaning steps like those you`ve described? That would be helpful. Thank you much for the description!
Hi RWNB! Unfortunately I couldn`t open the file. But it´s not what I`m looking for, because it seems to be quite flat. And I need some kind of "hexagonal boxes". But I like the changing hexagon size inside of the strukture. Is there a tutorial somewhere? Thanks a lot.
maybe it is difficult fore beginner,
but with this definition you are able
to create also hexagonal volums. i think so!
you just offset the main surface,
repeating the same procedure as in the first surface
and than offset between the desired curves.
anyway, i can try to do this and post it

Oh that would be great! If that is important I´ve got the version 6.0059. In your link there is a definition, similar to that one: http://www.grasshopper3d.com/profiles/blogs/hexagon-on-a-closed-sur... which I´ve built but for some reason it didn`t work :( I`ll try your link also but I think I just don`t get some important points. I understand videotutorials well, but there are only ready definitions as jpg.s for such hexagonal structures in internet. But I`ll keep trying :) Cheers!
