algorithmic modeling for Rhino

I saw a few projects that some guys were working on...I just wanted to know if anyone knows what this would be called and how could i go about generating a form such as these? tutorials? or just any advise is welcome.

This doesn't look like GH to me. While work like this is possible, this looks like TopMod to me. http://code.google.com/p/topmod/

 

If you want to achieve some of the same things with GH, the closest you can come is Giulio Piacentino's "Weaverbird" plug in. http://www.giuliopiacentino.com/weaverbird/.  

seems like maybe starting with a spherical shape, dividing it and re organizing the points the interpolate curve paths, then using meta balls > mesh from points > picture frame > catmull-clark. Prolly some functioned scaling as well.
