That the length of the vector is "1". This means that the vector only indicates direction and not magnitude.

Indeed, it has a magnitude of 1, it is just not used to indicate a magnitude.
ah, like a placeholder to give direction?
Very simply X*1 = X ... X/1 = X ... having a direction of 1 won't disturb many mathematical operations. This means that if you have another vector with a specific length, scalar, or a matrix that the result will only respond to a vector's direction as opposed to responding to both its orientation and length. Does that make more sense?
