Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

HI everybody,

I'm new to grasshopper so i dont think its a very difficult question.

I made a physical shell of gypsum and i defined a lot of points with x y and z coordinates.

These points I imported into rhino. And now i want to make surface through those points.

I wanted to do this with ''surface through points''. But i don't know what to use for U input.

Can anyone help me.

Thanks a lot!

Are your points in very specific places? What kind of surface are you trying to end up with? If you have a picture or a concept of what you are aiming for it would be easier to help.

The pictures are made of the physical model.

I measured the coordinates with a equal x and y distance. if you look from the top it's a rectangular grid.

Hi Timmers,

you can't. Surface From Points requires a complete rectangular point grid. You only have a partial grid. There's a number of options though:

1) give up on surfaces and use Delaunay meshing instead.

2) use Patch to create your surface.

3) somehow invent the missing points in the grid.

Which one would you prefer?

Oke thank you for your info.

I have the complete rectangular point grid but if i make a surface then there a no openings anymore.

So maybe the delaunay meshing i want to use. Can you give me more information of the meshing?

attached the complete rectangular point grid.

In that case you can make a Surface From Points. The U Count number is the number of points along the U direction of the grid. In this case 30.

Luckily your points are already sorted, so when you window-select them they are in the right order. If this wasn't the case you'd have to sort them first, which is a pain in the butt.

Hi David,

I'm trying to make the same thing happen to a point grid but unfortunately my points are not sorted, so when i used the surfacefrompointgrid component it generates a messed-up surface. How do i sort the points in order to get the right surface?

Thanks very much.

Just search for Delaunay in the grasshopper search box (double click on an empty spot in the canvas to show the search box). There should be two delaunay components, one that computes the edges and one that computes the mesh. You want the latter.

Thank you it looks good.

If I use the delaunay mesh the surface goes exactly through the points.

If I use the points through surface method the surface is nice curved but there are no openings anymore.

Because i want to export the surface into GSA i actually need the openings and a nice curved surface.

Is that only possible if i cut some pieces out of the surface or is there any other method?

dear timmers,

maybe you should rethink your approach.

I would encourage you to work with kangarro.
then you have no longer the problem with the surface.

good luck

That is really nice!

I will have a look at Kangaroo.

Because i have not much time i prefer to work with the surface.

Do you know a good and clear tutorial?

dear timmer,

i do not have a tutorial for kangaroo.
in the grasshopper forum you can find a lot of examples.
first you have to contact Daniel,
so that you get the access report for kangaroo.

I think that kangaroo is suitable for cable net structures and not for shell structures.

Because they behave in a different way.

But thank you very much for your advice.
