Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how to create different types of structural elements in Karamba, such as bar, tie, cable, spacer, ...?

I am doing tensegrity for my thesis. There are several element types set in Oasys GSA that I just need to choose from the list. But in Karamba I could not find these properties.

It would be a big help if someone can guide me how to find or how to set it.

Thank you in advance.

Duc

Hi Duc,

you can create beam elements with the 'LineToBeam'-component. For shell elements use the 'MeshToShell'-component.

Springs and Trusses are a bit hidden (which will change in one of the next releases of Karamba):

  • Springs can be defined via the 'Cross Sections'-component by selecting 'Spring' as the cross section.
  • Beams can be transformed into trusses by setting the 'Bending' to false in the 'ModifyElem'-component with element type 'Beam' selected.

Clemens

Hi Clemens,

Thank you so much for the answer. But what about a property like spacer?

Hi Duc,

do you mean by spacer a rigid constraint? As a work-around one could use a very stiff spring or beam for that. The disadvantage would be that the stiffness has to be chosen such that the constraint condition is sufficiently fulfilled on the one hand and the stiffness matrix is not too badly conditioned on the other hand.

Best,

Clemens

Hi Clemens,

Sorry for my late response. Yeah now I understand how those things work in Karamba. They are very customized.

Thank you very much!

Best,

Duc
