2 problems: Unable to detect generic floor type | Revit could not complete the external command

Hi,

I just started using GG and I tried to test it using two simple examples but unforunately I have some issues. First of all, I tried to import a simple box -walls, floor, roof- and while the walls are correctly imported, it is impossible to import the slabs no matter what I do. I keep getting the error in Picture 1.

After that, I followed one simple exercise-tutorial that Jon has uploaded on youtube, where he imports the slabs of a tower, and this time I had another error (Picture 2,3). I also attach this definition, as well as the IFC files that I've baked.

Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you!

Hi Amalia,

Revit uses system families for floors, roofs, walls etc.

I can't create one from scratch using the API, only duplicate a generic one and modify it.

You need to have a floor family in the project that has only a single material layer, else floor families can't be generated.

For the building storey name error, seems my plugin doesn't handle levels with empty names.  If you define a unique name each storey (as I've done in the attached), it should work better.

Let me know if this isn't helpful.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon!

Thank you for your quick reply. OK, so, the building storey name error is gone now, but I still get the other one in both definitions (shoebox+tower). I have a floor family that has only a single material layer (see picture) but it still does not work. Am I doing something wrong with the naming again?

OK, got it. I named the family "Generic Floor Type" and it worked.

I am not sure, though, that I understand your comment on the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZrA79nM1Ik [at 6:48], when you say that "a family has been created from the data within that grasshopper definition". I haven't used the name "Generic Floor Type" in GH, so why do I have to use this specific name in Revit? If I have different constructions, for example one concrete slab and one wooden slab, do I have to create different single material families in Revit and how can I name them correctly before getting the error? I hope this makes sense!

Thank you!
