Curve offset direction

Hi,

I have a series of surfaces at varying rotations that I wish to offset the border of towards the inside, but some are offsetting outside (to make windows). I have tried the offset inwards definition as discussed in this thread but it doesn't seem to work for me.

There was also mention of offsetting in both directions and just taking the smaller curve, but I've no idea where to start with that. Any help would be great.

use offset loose.

the second works with control points.
