Export mesh form .3dm to .max with vertex colours preserved?

How can I convert .3dm file to .max or .obj with coloured vertices? I want to work with my mesh in another software (max or zbrush for example) - but my attempt with rhino's default exporter has failed :((

.max is a proprietorial file format which is not made available to software outside the Autodesk umbrella.

.obj from what I can tell has two different flavours or rather two different approaches to reading and writing the file format. Those that support vertex colouring and those that don't. Either Rhino or the software you are opening it with doesn't. As Rhino doesn't provide an tick box option in the file settings i suspect it's the former.

Someone might be able to correct me.
