algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Now instead of reverting to "Slider" when more than one recipient is connected, the nearest one is used instead.

Hi David,
as always I'm late in the discussion... but having read the issues proximity could have, maybe these could be resolved by having a dropdown list appear on the sliders name when you connect multiple inputs.
But, as you said, this feature is completely accessory so it's already good enough.
could be cool!
Ha, 0.9.0051. Maybe.
Love it! What are you waiting for, why haven't we seen the video already :)
How about dragging an object so that the grip lines up closely with some other objects' grip. If you hold it steady there for a moment a hesitant connection is created. If you want to undo that connection, shake the object. If you let go of the mouse button, then the hesitant connection becomes a real connection.
No key combo, nice expert user approach.
Not sure if my 'Hot Connections' example made any sense? Combination of drag and keypress to automatically connect to closest component...I can understand if you get a bad taste in your mouth when thinking of adding another keycombo...
Per example? Of course you're right that canvas distance is an utterly meaningless metric for anything. However it felt like a better thing to do than nothing if there are multiple conflicting recipients hooked up to a slider.
I was more trying to come to terms with using the distance between components for other functionality, not just the slider name...
Luis, this is getting awfully detailed for something as basic as a default label. If you want to have control over the label, just type one yourself. If you leave it empty I will do my best to come up with a sensible one.
Interesting choice to use distance. Proximity within the GH definition is something of a strange concept since one could just as easily build things close up as traverse many a screen swipe to make a long connection. Will there be more actions made possible by component to component proximity? How about 'hot' connections: move a component close enough to another whilst holding down some key and it makes a connection to the closest component, releasing this key will deactivate hot connection detection...
