The two players agree on the number of games they will play ahead of time, which must be an even number. One player takes on the role of codemaker, while the other takes on the role of codebreaker. The codemaker selects a four-code-peg pattern. Duplicates and blanks are permitted based on the player's preference, therefore the player could choose four identical code pegs or four blanks. The codebreaker may not use blanks in order to establish the final code if blanks are not elected to be a part of the game. The chosen pattern is inserted into the shield's four holes, visible to the codemaker but not to the codebreaker.
