On the occasion of Designers' Saturday 2010 in Langenthal we enriched the spatial potential of the Zipshape principle from bent to twisted geometries. We set up a parametric model that is able to construct a developable straight strip along any given spatial curve—just like the bending behavior of a straight paper strip that got manually twisted. The resulting «ZipSculpture» is a continuous, developable ribbon assembled from eight elements with 300 individual tooth geometries and a total length of almost 20 meters.

Hi Mårten—
Gravity plays a huge role in this scenario: The sculpture is hanging with nylon threads from the wooden beams crossing the ceiling. On a furniture scale, the elasticity of the material composition with the cork-wood-latex core is something very much appreciated—but on a «building» scale it is not really helpful. However, with those super small sections we used, I doubt it would have worked in solid wood without threads…

Very nice! (Is gravity playing a larger role now because of the scale?)
