this is great work. if I am guessing correctly, each 'cell' of the surface is subdivided according to its position 'up' from the base, and each quadrant of each 'cell' is further subdivided N times where each 'upper' quadrant is divided N_+2, and each 'left' and 'right' quadrant is divided n+1 times, for each 'transitional' row of cells, and then every other? row of cells, shows equal division of the 4 quadrant of each cell.

Something like that. Great work. I am sure that I missed part of the sequence. oh - width of each mesh plane increases according to distance away from 'bottom'
