Ah cool! I like your work! Think this is my favorite so far! ;) It is a pitty that this image is only 2D maybe you can do a little gif animation that shows the rest of this beauty in a slow rotation?! Anyway, go on! Hope to reach this at one day too!

Basically it starts as a regular sphere, then it is deformed by points using custom spacial deform, then it is converted into panels where the points that deform are also acting as attractors controlling the "spikeness" of the surface.
