this type of structure is called a reciprocal structure or a 'nexorade'. All elements are cut so that they support a neighbour and are supported by a neighbour, it's the overall assembly that guarantees structural stability.
This particular structure has been studied by Maurizio Brocato and Lucia Mondardini, it is inspired by a french patent from the 16th century for a flat vault deposited by Mr. Abeille, giving the name 'Abeille vault'.
