I am thinking to use webcam and optically trace outline, convert it to curves and try to find best match. I am working with wood veneers and some inlays could contain hundreds of pieces, some of them need to be re cut for whatever reason, there need to be easy way to tame this storm of parts.

I just had my laptop open and cross checked the numbers on the parts with the digital model, not the most refined method..  When i worked with larger pieces in the other project we used post-it notes instead of engraving and printed out a position drawing for each part (the one you can see in some of the other photos). 

 

I guess there is no easy method if you have small pieces which you can't label directly.. If you come up with any neat solution I am eager to hear :)

After parts are cut how do you find which one goes where? Do you have any system or print out 1:1 on paper and then compare? I work with wood veneer and direct labeling is out of question and sometimes i find myself playing puzzle game at work. I would like to speed up process sometimes.
