Understood.
Thank you for the replies, and your time.
Hope to see more of great projects of yours.

Yes, the holes were laser cut. I ended up rebuilding them as hexagons to cut down on cutting time, though.

Interesting.
And the laser cutter punched the wholes on the ends of stars, or you did?

Comment by John Brockway on November 13, 2012 at 10:51am

No problem!

The 3-pointed star components were developed in GH to have a a circular tab, about 1cm in diameter and with a tiny hole in the center, attached to each of the points. I used 3/16" aluminum rivets to join the various overlapping flanges together.

See attached photo of some of the components - that should give you a better idea of how they're connected

Thank you for the reply.
Just one more question, and I promise I won't bother you:
How did you connect those paper pattern pieces? Or more precisely what is at the intersection point of these paper "stars"?

Comment by John Brockway on November 9, 2012 at 5:03pm

That's correct - since i'm using paper for the skin, it doesn't really have much tension capacity. It would be a great exercise to work with a material with more embedded structural capacity in that way - if I get a chance to do something else like this, i'll definitely be exploring the concept!

I see.
The covering (that pattern) does not effect the tensegrity structure in any way?

It is just there for aesthetical reason? (do not get me wrong, project looks fantastic, I am just interested in details).

Yes, exactly - just looking for a way to differentiate the forces in the drawing. In the installation itself, I used aircraft cables and turnbuckles for 'tuning'.

Very creative John. Amazing work.

What are those blue lines? Cables under tension?
