I pulled it from here: http://web.cs.wpi.edu/~matt/courses/cs563/talks/metaballs.html But I think you're right.  It should be pretty easy to adjust the falloff function...I should have a look at some others.

Don't look like metaballs, more like Connolly surfaces, what's the falloff function?
