1) A triangular mesh sphere is generated using an icosahedron as a base and refining it with WeaveBird's loop subdivision (each time the coordinates are unitized). 

2) This mesh is used as input for directional reaction diffusion (RD). Direction is given by spirals

3) The result of RD, the concentration of a species is used in order to split the mesh which was displaced by a positive and negative amount of concentration. So 2 meshes are obtained and joined. With some smoothing (Catmull&Clark here). I must have done some remeshing but the look is like some inflated objects with a seam. Iso-splitting of the mesh is very primitive and not as good as David Stasiuk one. But if needed script is available. It output 2 meshes and curves.
