Thanks Andrew that's awesome! At the moment this is part of my master's thesis, and since I'm not looking to having my title revoked in the future, I guess I'm on my own. When I'm done with my thesis and I'm jobless and bored I guess I'll work on it on my own to entertain myself and learn. Otherwise I might do a github out of it, or simply take your word ;)
The second part of the code -planar remeshing- doesn't work iteratively and it's not optimized (at all). And it shares very little with Whiting's paper. But the professor told me that what I have is enough, therefore, to focus on other parts of my thesis. The other aspects of my thesis deal with shell optimization and biomimicry.

Yup! In many environmental studies (specially energy simulation and CFD studies) there is huge effort for geometry simplification. Honeybee (http://www.grasshopper3d.com/photo/honeybee) will be so happy to meet your Bunny at some point! Well, it is also still under development =)
GHPython to component is on the list and will hopefully happen at some point (https://github.com/mcneel/ghpython/issues/43).
Use this for environmental studies, really? You have me very intrigued, how so would this be useful environmental studies?
Didn't know there was an effort to make GH components from python scripts. I thought that field of work was pretty much dead since Microsoft "killed" IronPython.
Thanks Jesus, Looking forward to use it pretty soon. I hope the problem of making GH components from Python scripts be solved so you don't have to re-write the same component. Nevertheless there is a great potential to use this component for Geometry simplification for environmental studies! Great job again. -Mostapha
At the moment the algorithm is not completely robust. When I am finished I will probably make it publicly available. I would prefer wrapping it as a grasshopper component, but since I have coded it in python I guess I'll first have to code it in C# or VB.net.
But I'm busy with other things, so this might take some months.
This is pretty impressive work! Is it going to be available as a product at some point?
