Arthur,

You helped me through my thesis project, thanks again.

I was curious if you could post something that you have been working on to show people (me) what this tool and really capable of. What the feedback loop is with the tool when you know what your goal is.

Im thinking of putting a dining hall I'm working on through Pachyderm and share here so I can learn how to use this tool in a professional environment as designer, not specifically an acoustician.

Hi David,

You're welcome. It sounds like you are aware that I haven't documented everything the software can do... that's pretty much my fault.

I think it's a very good idea to put up some of my own work. I've asked my employer, and we are looking for projects we can do that with.

The difficulty is, of course, that many of my projects are either underway, or governed by strict NDA's, so finding projects I can do that with can be difficult. I'll do what I can.

If you need help with anything as you begin to use the software in practice, please let me know.

Arthur,

I think that my issues with using the software as a design tool is that I still don't have enough formal acoustic training. What are the metrics that really matter, how do I create a feedback loop that will manifest in reality. My position is that these basics need to be a larger part of architecture training such that we integrate sound into the built environment.

I am working on a project now, a dining hall and new commercial kitchen. Aside from tuning the dining hall for conversation, I would like to detail the dish area so that it has a positive influence on the soundscape of the dining hall. The dish pit has a 4'x3' opening that sound would move through.

How should I begin setting up this problem to tune the space?

Hi David,

In some respects, this seems like might have been something you would want to consult with an acoustician about. Absent that, I can get you started. It will require some research on your part, though, and maybe we can find ways to make the program integrate that education in a little more useful a way together.

It seems to me that you really care about the Speech Transmission Index (STI) in the space. This depends on the background noise, though, and that is driven by two things. 1) the noise coming from the Kitchen and Dish station, and 2) noise generated by people, which is dependent on the reverberation in the space, and ultimately the Lombard Effect.

These are both affected in non-trivial ways by the reverberation time in the room. There is a good paper by J.H. Rindel from the Euronoise conference in Maastricht (2015) that you might look up to begin to come up with some of the information you would need in order to predict the STI.

Kind regards,

Arthur
