algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi All--
Here’s some final work from our LARP 543 Media 3 course at University of Pennsylvania: https://vimeo.com/147858246; https://vimeo.com/147752946. The final assignment (Dynamic Diagrams) asked students to develop their own unique standard of suitability analysis and site selection using GIS & Grasshopper. In addition to their own unique data, students were required to use 4 primary data sets (aspect, slope, hillshade, soils, land cover) in the process. The area of study was a peripheral region just outside of downtown Pittsburgh. The region has a history of landslides, high vacancy rates, development shrinkage, industrial land use, and deforestation.

really nice.! thanks for sharing.
i noticed that at the comments section there are some interesting works. maybe we could copy paste them in groups discussions for future reference.
best

This is super cool work. Digital McHarg-ian landscape planning. I have a couple of questions about execution.
I'm guessing that all of the raster analysis was done in ArcMAP and then projected onto the topo mesh in GH? Whereas the slope analysis I guess was done with the definition that you shared previously. I'm curious then about the flow direction - is this something that the studio developed, or something that you are building on an ongoing basis? It's based on the mesh, yes?
Thanks for sharing! It's really great to see what you guys are working on.
Hi Ivan--
Sorry for the delayed reply. You're correct the site criteria (aspect, slope, hillshade, soil, etc) was mostly done in ArcMap using raster analysis tools. Thereafter we used model builder to weight the criteria and test outcomes when the criteria were given different % of importance. This was formatted, exported and brought into Rhino via Grasshopper. The process of site selection was then continued in Grasshopper by using additional criteria (area, proximity, elevation, drainage, etc.).
The flow direction is calculated on a mesh. You can find the flow direction through the "parametric topo design & analysis" definition I posted earlier. With that definition you can get the downward flow direction using either the Sonic plugin or the "hachure" slope analysis portion. The curve/ vector directions on the slope analysis is the same as the downward slope of the mesh face.
Hope that answers your question!
