algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,

Is it possible to create a tapered rectangular section in Karamba?

In general, can I set a function to determine the depth of the beam?

I have attached an image of what I am aiming to model.

Thank you!

Hi Giulia,

at the moment (Karamba 1.1.0) it is not possible to specify tapered sections directly. However you can divide the beam into small sections and attach individual, varying cross sections to each piece.
Rectangular cross sections can be defined via Karamba's 'Cross Sections'-component. Select 'Trapezoid' in the drop-down list, set upper and lower width to identical values and provide a list of numbers as cross section heights. You can attach the cross sections to beams either by beam number or beam identifier via the 'Elems|Ids' input-plug.

Best,

Clemens

Hi Clemens,

Thank you for your reply!

I am trying to follow your suggestion, but having some problems..

I attach the file I am working on so you may understand better. First of all, the BeamView does not show the rectangular cross-sections I have specified, but shows a circular section instead.

Then, by varying the depth at the beam's supports 'Height at 0 and 6' the deflection does not vary accordingly, but remains constant even though I can see the cross-sections varying in the panel showing the Cross-Section output.

Can you spot what is wrong?

Thanks again,

Giulia

Sorry for not uploading the file..

I have managed to get Karamba to show me the rectangular cross-section and the deflection is now updating as I change the values of ho. The only thing is that I cannot visualise the difference in height of the beam sections. Is this because Karamba is taking only one cross-section for all of the beam segments?

Hi Giulia,

in the above definition the structure of the data tree at the cross section component was not correct (see attached definition). Each cross section was assigned to all beams so that the last cross section overwrote all others.

Clemens
