algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi.

Any good ideas on how to add a hinge between to planar perpendicular shell elements? Say hinges at slab edges on a wall?

Hi Rasmus,

currently (Karamba 1.1.0) the best option is to connect the two edges with spring elements. The Karamba MeshBreps-component allows to specify corresponding nodes at the two boundaries which shall be connected.

I am not sure how exactly you mean. Do you have any examples? 

In the shown example points connect at edges with "independent" meshBrep components. 

I do not know if this is just coincident, but otherwise I know how to use the IPts input. 

However I am not sure how to best make the spring connection, is this using "joints"?

Also does Karamba have a clever way of finding and sorting these coinciding points?

I am sorry, I do not have an example. Linear joints is something which is missing in Karamba 1 1.0.

You can turn linear elements into springs by attaching a spring cross section.

There are two ways to place the springs. First you can leave a small gap between the shell elements that need to be connected and place springs in between them. It is important that the element nodes on the two sides of the connection are properly aligned (by e.g. using IPts of the 'MeshBreps'-components) - otherwise the spring axis will be inclined with respect to the fold. The second possibility would be to define coincident points and define zero length springs between them. For details see e.g. the 'ZeroLengthElement_Scissor.gh'-example in the Karamba examples folder.

I understand your solution, but it might over-complicating things a little for my current project, however I am happy to hear that I sense that you might include linear releases in a future version?? :)

Maybe someday load carrying direction can be included as well, then Karamba can be better used for pre-fabricated elements.

I hope that you are doing good Clemens - and that we will meet at AAG this year?
