mesh or 2d pattern to 3d geometry

Another question I want to put it here,

To achieve these reciprocal pattern(finally, I would like to use interlock wooden frames as the construction detail), no matter triangular, quadrilateral, hexagon or other patterns, using the correspond mesh as the base is better than to transfer 2d pattern onto 3d geometry, because after the transfer, some crossings will be missed.

Is this the reason why you want to use this method(mesh-pattern)?
