algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,

I was trying to use Gismo to generate building shapes at a location in Chicago. Comparing the results with Google Earth, it appears that several building shapes are missing from the Gismo generated model. Is there anything that I am doing incorrectly? My model is attached.

Thanks,

Sarith

Hi Sarith,

Thank you for posting the comparison.
Gismo take its geometry from openstreetmap.org, a map database entirely depended on crowdsourcing.
Due to this, a lot of times you will find features which are present in Google Earth, but not present in Gismo, the way you've noticed this with Chicago buildings.
In this case it seems that the 3d buildings that are missing from Gismo, are actually those which have no height nor number of stories/floors information attached to them. That's why Gismo was not able to generate them.

There are two solutions to this:

1) Become an Openstreetmap mapper (it's free) and add the missing building information by yourself (a 5 minute tutorial can be found in here), which would enable Gismo to use them.

2) Randomize the height of the buildings which do not contain the height or number of stories information.
By using the randomHeightRange_ input of the "OSM 3D" component.

I attached the definition below which uses the second option.

Please let me know if something is unclear, or if I didn't answer your question.

Hi Djordje,

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply and the example. I think randomizing the height of the buildings would be a decent compromise in this case as most of the missing buildings seem to be within a certain range of heights.

Sarith

Hi Sarith,
Okay! If you have other issues with this definition or any other Gismo related question, please do not hesitate to ask!

Djordje
