Miguel,

gHowl no longer supports OO.  The only files it can read and write are xlsx files.

What a pity! Is there any alternative for the non-MS Office users?

you can read and write xlsx files with libre office: http://www.libreoffice.org/download

You can create a spreadsheet in google docs and download the file as *.xlsx
