Surface & Contour Lines in Elk

Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a shortcut to creating a surface and contour lines from the topo information (from SRTM info) in Elk?  The topo component only has options for points or curves (one direction only) but no option for surfaces. When I try to use surface from points it doesnt work.
