algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello,

I am trying to mimic wind behavior in a city. The goal is to use a bunch of blocks (buildings) to deform a series of lines (wind) to flow around them.  The model should satisfy the following criteria:

The wind should respond to city density. If there are a bunch of standalone buildings then the wind flows around each of them. If there are many buildings next to each other the wind flows around the whole group of buildings.

The wind can blow from any direction.

perhaps, I can use first part of the code, but the main problem for me is teaching grasshopper to differentiate between standalone buildings and groups of buildings.

Any ideas on logic I can use?  Your help is much appreciated.

Maybe the virtual wind tunnel in Vasari can help (not sure yet about extracting a result back to GH)

Thank you for you response. Unfortunately, I am developing an educational grasshopper model and adding additional plug-ins makes it difficult for beginners to use. I’m looking for a geometrical solution to this problem. 

 

Volha, can you explain the purpose of your project?
What are you planning to do with those wind lines?

If you want to take some kind of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis, for example: an impact of the wind on the shape of the buildings or on pedestrians, bear in mind that this is quite complex problem, a whole science. And that few curves that go around objects in Rhino and Grasshopper can not replace it.

Even in these modern days of advanced software technologies, CFD applications are still not reliable as wind tunnels - a real world analysis of the wind impact.

Volha, building on this comment, as your project is academic, if you have a long time frame, and are doing research, one interesting thesis project would be to write a grasshopper CFD plug-in using the CFD calculations provided in OpenFoam, an open source CFD program and source code.

Hi Arpan and Djordje,

Thank you for attention. It is not a project with a long time frame, so no thesis projects. Wind behavior is not the main point of the model I am working on. I wanted to use wind just as a representational tool to visually distinguish high density neighborhoods from low density neighborhoods. It doesn’t have to be scientifically accurate.

Hello Volha, while it is not necessarily a CFD, the upcoming field components might be a good way to start?
