Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello,

I am trying to analyse part of a 3d voronoi stucture like this

but so far i receive error message about rigid body

and karamba view show just bottom cells

I would like to have rigid Beam Joints (that should make whole structure rigid body, right?).

Questions

1

In KarambaManual there is component called "BeamJoint" but i dont have it is it available only in pro version?

2

Is there other method form makeing my structure rigid body?

3

Should all lines be flatter before going to "LineToBeam" component. Unfortunately my system crash when i try to do that

Hello Karol,

the BeamJoint-component can be used to define hinges at the end-points of beams. It's a feature of the pro/pro-student version. By default all connections between beams are rigid.

The incongruent dimension of data-trees is sometimes the cause of problems when defining Karamba-models. Plug your Karamba-model into a panel-component and check whether there is really just one model and how many elements that model has.

I can not test your definition because the geometry-input is missing. Attach that data by right-clicking on the curve-components and selecting 'Internalise data'.

Hi Clemens,

Thank You for super fast and informative replay.

flatten all lines before imputing them in to "line to beam" and now karamba is working without any error.

I think Your examples karamba +galapagos are fantastic, I'd like to do similar thing with this structure.

For now displacement model is really crazy and i can not display stresses.

I will go to manual again but if you could have a look on it i would be greatfull.

Hi Karol,

your geometry contains many duplicate lines. You can use 'RemoveDuplicateLines' to get rid of them.

Karamba assumes all input to be in meter and does not take account of the units you choose when starting Rhino. This makes your structure very large and causes the long calculation time for mesh-display. The reason why you see no stresses is probably because the cross-section dimensions are so small compared to the structure.

Hi,

Thank You, ! i removed duplicated lines and points (it is nice component for other stuff as well :)

Scale was changed to meters - now displacemnt looks really nice.

Render settings still seems not to be working.

I can change beem division and thay are visible but strese are not displayed...

What else could cause the problem?

Hi,

scale your geometry by a factor of 0.001 - then you will see the cross sections. The peculiar thing is, that one gets only the mesh-edges. Do you have any special viewing options set in rhino?

Clemens

Hi Clemens,

It was  not rhino viewing options i checked that million times...

it was grasshoper preview options.  I realised that after your comment.
it looks good now. Thank you for your assistance and patience

Hi Clemens,

I went through manuał and i like CroSecOpti-component.

Actually this is reason why i would like to make this analisys for my diploma.

1 find optimal arrangement of cells with karamba and galapagos (ok to do with free version)

2 optimalize cross section of each beam. CroSecOpti-component seem to be perfect for that because as i understand it works in a loop.

I think i will need just this component from pro version. How can i get it? should ask my profesor to contact you directly?

best,

karol

Hi Karol,

there are the examples 'Optimize the cross sections of a beam' and 'Iterative gridshell design using HoopSnake' on http://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/karamba/page/example-files which contain a C# script that can be used to determine the optimum cross section of circular hollow tubes. This comes for free.

In case you want to do more elaborate cross section design (other cross sections than circular hollow tubes, procedure according to eurocode EC3) you can purchase the pro-student license for 30EUR.

Clemens

Hi,

Thanks i think that may work for now but i have to make some more tests.

Btw. i have hard time finding list of componets which are just in pro version.

karol

Hi Karol,

the feature list on http://www.food4rhino.com/project/karamba shows which additional functionality is in the pro-version.

Best,

Clemens
