the curve closed component you are using does not close a curve - it simply tells you if the curve is closed or not. In many cases your curves are already closed; you can close the ones that are not by adding a line to connect their end points, and then joining that line to the curve. See below for an idea of how to do that:

What do you mean by apply the pattern to the surface?  Are you thinking of projecting the curves onto the surface?  If so, search project within gh to see some options.
