Using Nulls to speed interaction. Crashing. Is this why?

Hello guys,
I'm trying out grasshopper to do packaging iterations, basically a glorified macro. On my first build, interaction was too slow so I tried to use nulls to short circuit processing streams but now I'm getting crashes. Is there a better way to make a sub path not process to save compute times?

oops, forgot to post image of workspace.  It's a bit sprawling but this is a vague "best practice" as the cause of the crash is being debugged by trial and error since there isn't any kind of crash report I know of.

Found error.  Tree was nesting copies of breps.  Hard to catch since one item can split into two during interaction, couldn't see during testing.
