system req

I am a beginner in gh and I would like to have some doubts clarified.I would like to know how many days would it take for me to master grasshopper?I am also learning everything by myself just with the help of tutorials.I would also like to know the system requirements for working in an advanced project.Currently I have a dell xps15 L502x its an i7 and has 6gb ram (its almost 3 years old but I hardly used it ).Is this sufficient or should I upgrade my RAM?(current situation i cant afford to buy a new laptop,but if this is not enough I might have to purchase one,need your opinion regarding it.)

I am not sure what complexity this tutorial is (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TFrz2eWyB0) but when I try to generate this object over the grid pattern my system hangs.Thats why I would like to know if my system is good enough.

How long to "master" GH depends entirely on your aptitude and perseverance at learning, especially by reading and understanding the code posted on this forum by some of the old masters. It isn't trivial at all so I would think in terms of months or years instead of days.

Your laptop is fine.

GH can crash when overwhelmed by sloppy use of mis-matched data trees - the most complex part of GH in many ways - often involving multiple 'Graft' operations that inadvertently result in _millions_ of geometry objects being created. Perhaps if you post here the GH code that crashed, someone can tell you why.

I agree with Joseph. There is no definitive length of time to "master" GH. I got into Grasshopper a couple of years ago and I would say it took me a year of intense use to be very confident in what I was doing. Saying that I look and answer a lot of forum questions and still get stuck on some and still learning a lot from others out there.

One thing to say is that I took a 5 day intermediate Grasshopper course in Paris and that helped me so much. There are workshops all around the world, so if you can in any way attend one, you should. Also there are some cool online tutorials. I especially like the ones by rese-arch.org - they are not free, but as close as you can get to a workshop and totally worth it.

As far as hardware goes I also think it will be fine. What I find much more important for working with Rhino and GH is to have 2 large monitors. It will really change the way you work! A lot of times GH will take long to show results, because you messed up the data structure somewhere. If it is taking some time because of heavy calculations a faster computer wont be that much faster. So I think its fine with what you have and I would just look into getting at least 1 large monitor.

Hi Armin ! Thank you soo much ! I have been looking for workshops but people hardly know anything about grasshopper in south india.And pretty much what they offer to teach is the utmost basics which I already know.thats y I am forced to depend on online tutorials.Thank you once again for your suggestions !
