Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hi everybody,

i have to convert a series of surfaces (a car body) into an efficient mesh that would not lose important details (like little fillets or little bumps) and would appear as continuous once smoothed (in 3dsmax). i thought an adaptive subdivision method would help in this case. do u know any method to suggest? any script? any definition?

or otherwise a way to import rhino surfaces in 3dsmax as nurbs surfaces?

thanx a lot in advance

hi vittorio,

there are different softwares doing that, for example http://www.npowersoftware.com/ (i've never actually tried it )

or you can try exporting your model as *.IGES file wich gives the best results exporting nurbs surfaces directly

but for me the best way to do it is to work out your definition so the output would be mesh object (for example using UVSrf to Mesh or doing any boolean operations on the mesh objects ..

In any case you would need to supply yourself with this

Hi Vittorio!

If you export as IGES (NURBS) you should be able to import NURBS surfaces in 3D studio MAX.

Well, maybe you don't need Grasshopper for this: if you use wisely the meshing algorithm in Rhino (i.e. tweaking number of quads, minimum and maximum edge length, polygon aspect ratio and especially turning on refine surface option) you would get good enough results for what you need (you are exporting for rendering, right?).

It's better to convert first to mesh (so that you can check it) and then export as 3ds in this case. For extra care: run a zebra check or an environment check on the NURBS in Rhino, then go to "adjust mesh" and tweak it until you are satisfied with what you see; then use the same settings to generate the export mesh.

It might be also that you have to export separately some parts with different settings.

Hope this helps!
