Surface offset inconsistency

I am trying to offset a trimmed surface - if I attach the surface to the offset component, I get Null for non-zero distances on the offset.

If I bake it and then offset the surface using Rhino commands, the offset works.

If I bake it, then reference that surface and connect the new surface to an offset component, the offset works.

What is going on here?
