Square Packing Question

Using some of a circle packing script, I have changed the circle to a polygon. The packing is working, but the polygons are not packing very tightly. I believe this is where the spring is involved. Seems like it is referencing the radius of the circle. 

Any help on getting these polygons to pack better would be appreciated. Thanks!
