splitting a surface with a complex pattern

Hi,

I am trying to create an Islamic pattern screen (based on definition by Yong Ju Lee), but with an inverted pattern (cutout from the outlining surface rather than the pattern itself being the surface). I tried using surface split but can't seem to subtract the pattern from the outlining frame and keep getting weird results.

Any help would be appreciated.
