algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello all im pretty sure there has been a couple of discussions on the subject of parametric urbanism but I wanted to see if anyone could point me to some discussions involving space planning with GH and or other software.

Has anyone used information stemming from ArcGIS and brought it into GH? What about crowd simulation? I am pretty intrigued by this video and wanted to see if anyone knows what software it was built in or if they have tried something similar in GH.

Thanks for your time,

-Charles

In GH it would be Galapagos for sure. http://vimeo.com/23061345. Im sure Mr. Rutten will chime in soon enough.

Yes absolutely, I built this configuration with Galapagos and Geco http://vimeo.com/27224118 for form finding which is pretty straight forward but building a parametric model with a 'set' program with collision detection and circulation that adjusts to each configuration becomes pretty intensive. I usually find that the more logic I employ the less flexible/adaptable my model becomes. I did post a discussion on collision detection which David kindly responded to. Thanks for the Vid, let me know if you come across anything else.

I don't know if this helps or not, but this was at building context using IFC to extract the information to other BIM software and the same could be done at site context with multiple buildings.

Thanks for the post Jon, im really looking looking for the micro vs the macro i.e. program internal to a single building vs external site context with multiple buildings . Nonetheless this looks great and could be pretty useful. Thanks again.
The software used was Missler's Top Solid.

Thanks Luis, so the software used for this video is Top Solid? Pretty interesting considering the software seems to be design for machining.

Yes, its Top Solid.  Its a typical Parametric Modeller.  Additional modules are focused on production, but the base is basic parametric relationships. It has the functionality to create your own 'parts' which are manifested in various ways.  I can imagine here that they created a part which can be instantiated with control points.  Maybe one part which is instantiated with 4 control points another with 5, etc.  The logic within that part would go on to set up what happens within the cell.  Automatically instantiating the parts (a la scripting Catia's Power Copies) was not so readily accessible through scripting when I was using top Solid.  I mean, it was available, but the code at the time was hairy.  I think they have improved on this quite a bit.

While being able to create your own parts shortcuts some of the logic, it can be done in any software that allows parametric relationships.

I should add that there was probably a lot of video editing, this is not to belittle the work of the design team, its an interesting video.  But from working with top solid, I know a bit of what it does, and what is edited together in a video...

Interesting use of the tool, thanks for the explanation and observation.

Charles -

For ArcGIS information, Chris Wilkins has explored this in the past.  Here is a thread you might start with:

Chris' page is here:

For crowd simulation I might look here:

Burro Happold has a Rhino Plug-in for crowd simulation.

Scott, thanks for the links, great information, I saw a Buro Happold lecture at UCLA a few months back, very cool stuff they are doing.
