You could assign paths by the Z height to put the pieces in different lists? In this case the Z coordinates of the centroids are multiplied by 1000 in order to have integers for the paths. Only going to three significant figures works in this case, but any further and the variation in Z coordinate of the centroids will assign geometries to different paths - you might want to add a "round" function to the numbers if this causes any problems in the future.
Had a thought, you could just sort by Z and and partition the list?
