I would also like to find a solution to this that doesn't involve any photoshop compositing...

i agree. i still think it shouldn't be that complicated to use the same view/screencaptureing methods like rhino.

it wouldn't only save time - you could also do things like "rendering" different geometries with different opacity or different orders of coverings..

ok - you already can do it with several mask passes but its a little pain..
