Simplest way to form a mesh out of diagonal panels?

Here's another way:

It splits the surface into diagonal panels with Geodesic lines, so it should still work when the surface is curved. The only downside is that the list is flattened in Merge.

I suppose so. That could turn into a pretty computationally heavy script though with the surface split at the end.
