If you can select the surface in rhino, it isn't locked. Otherwise unlock it.

Surfaces that are part of a BRep cannot be input to a surface param. Explode the geometry before selecting your surface.

Other than that try to decribe what exactly you are doing. Maybe post the rhino and GH files.

ah. I didn't have it exploded. I exploded the surface and it worked. thanks!

You can do it GH too - If you need to get one surface out of a brep, link it to explode brep, then you can use the list item, or cull pattern to get the right face from the faces output of the explode.
