algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hello All,
I'm a student at CU Boulder in Architecture. Right now I have this problem with Grasshopper because my computer has the new updates for Grasshopper, but the school computers do not, they have an older version.
I can't update the school computers (for some reason they don't want people installing their own programs)
Is there a way to save a GH script down so that it can be read on older versions of the program?
Thanks for your help!
Julie

nope
If you know how to open two versions of Grasshopper in two different instances of Rhino then, provided you haven't got any new components and the GUIDs haven't altered you should be able to copy and paste from one canvas to the other.
This at the very least might give you a starting base with some holes to fill.
interesting
Copy/paste uses the exact same mechanism as file write/read. There's just no way you can ever go back once the file format forwards compatibility has been broken.
If it's a minor break, then it actually is possible to manually repair the xml file, but I typically collect file breakages and release them all at once, so as to minimize the total number of file breaking releases, which means the odds are it will be a massive job.
Sorry.

Thank you! I think it's a massive job no matter what, re-writing here I come!
Thanks everyone for the comments.
I tried all of them I could!
Thanks!
Julie
Hi Julie,
in general, no. But try saving as .ghx (and not .gh).
This normally allows to at least open some parts of the file.
Also, in which version are you trying to use or open the file at school?
If it's too old, you can also try to convince the IT manager to update all computers...
Thanks,
- Giulio

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately it's as I've feared, and I will probably just need to re-write the whole thing in the earlier version. Thanks for the help though!
One more possibility - you can copy the C:\program files\Rhino\plug-ins\grasshopper folder from your own computer to the school computer, and within Rhino plug-in manager install the newer copy of grasshopper - this works without the admin privileges necessary to update it with the installer.
I cannot provide any more help than what has already been suggested, but wanted to say hi! I graduated from CU Boulder in 2002...
That's awesome! What are you doing now?
Welcome to
Grasshopper
