Rhino/Grasshopper as slave on server

Hi,

I'm wondering if it's possible or will be to use grasshopper and rhino on a distant server as slave. Could be usefull.

I'm using GH to define models and change value easily, and I think that being able to generate geometries based on a GH definition and download the result without launching manually Rhino/GH each time could be very cool.

Yes, this could be a nice feature.

Did you try with GHowl? I´m not very sure how to make it work, but seems posible: you could receive instructions via UDP sended by a remote computer, process the algorithm on the server and then send back the output, again with GHowl.

This have for sure been done by someone in the forum...

we are working on a project in which this process should be implement sometime in the future in order to serve results to our clients, but we have not make research yet about this topic...

We have no plans in this direction. We're so busy with Rhino5 that nobody is willing or able to think about these kinds of things. There's also severe legal issues to consider. Rhino is typically licensed as a one-use product. You buy one copy, you can install it on as many machines as you like but you're only allowed to use one of those installations at any given time. What you're describing would muddy the waters greatly.

It is probably possible to do this sort of thing already if you're willing to code up a wrapper layer that on the right talks to a Rhino+Grasshopper instance running on some machine while on the left talks to any number of remote machines. But McNeel does not have this technology and we're not planning on writing it*.

Not sure about the severe legal issues, I understand well the McNeel's policy but a lots of software (not CAD) have desktop and server licencing, and considering the server one, in my mind, is not used to model but only to allow to change parameters on an already defined model.

I'm not skilled anough to code up myself something like that. May be one day.
