Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

First of all, thank you for releasing this plugin and the source. They way it connects Revit with Grasshopper is very interactive and seems to be actually useful in a real working environment.

I'm being "strong-armed" into teaching a course on Dynamo for Revit users. I'm hoping that I can convince them to use a combination of Grasshopper and plugins like this instead.

First, I found a bug when the computer has strange culture settings (like here in Spain) and the decimal symbol is a comma rather than a dot. The numbers connected to a parameter input are not passed properly to Revit. This might very well be a bug in Revit's API.

I'd also like to make some requests (I understand the plugin is free, feel free to raise middle finger if it's too much work or don't think are a good idea):

- Could you add an option to remove the dialog that asks to modify or cancel geometry in Revit so that the connection becomes more interactive?

- Being able to select the family and type in a dialog box is really nice, but I'd like to know if it's possible to be able to select them in a different component that also had inputs that allowed you to search for them using strings with wildcards. This component would have an output of type "familyandtype" that would be connected to the main component. It could also allow the addition of extra outputs that are family parameters (like the main component) but to read them rather than write them. This could allow the use of Grasshopper logic to place different sized objects when the geometry parameter is set as type rather than instance:

- For ElementID parameters you could have a similar component that outputs an ElementID type that can be connected to the main component when the parameter is of this type. The input would be a string and the component would find the corresponding ElementID when the name of it matches the string.

Thanks.

I looked at both metric and imperial units, but I don't think I ever tested it with using a comma instead of a period to indicate the decimal.  I don't think it would be too difficult to make sure that works too.

For your recommendations:

  • It would be fairly trivial to add another option to the Revit settings to skip the prompts and I don't have a problem with it.
  • Using multiple types or even families is something that I've been seeing as a problem so something needs to be done about.  Not sure what it will end up looking like just yet, but thanks for the suggestion and diagram.
  • ElementID parameters again are something I know I'm going to have to resolve and is already planned for the next revisions that I make.
