you have 2 options

geometry pipeline component found in tab parameter/geometry or dynamic geometry pipeline found in Human plugin

It works perfectly with layers in the root level, however I cannot seem to reference geometry in Sub-Layers.

what does 'Name' do?

Yes, Human supports sublayers - be sure to check the "Use Full paths" option when you right click the component and specify layer names like "Parent::Child::SubChild"
