algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi Timothy,
Many thanks for this excellent and very useful plugin. I have been using Elk to generate city-scale models, such as this:
http://james-ramsden.com/modelling-the-city-of-york-with-grasshoppe...
This has been mostly very successful, but I have a few questions/suggestions:
1) Is is possible to extract relations? For example, the York Museum Gardens are described by a relation, and at the moment aren't detected by Elk. If not, is this something you have in the pipeline?
2) Is there any way to get building height data? (i.e. for all polylines with "building", return the value from the "height" tag, if available) I have a workaround that involves using GenericOSM with K = "height", though this will return false positives if the OSM file contains any non-building objects with the height tag.
Thanks in advance for your help,
James

Hey James,
I've been slowly working on updates to Elk over the past few months. Work has gotten int he way and prevented me from getting as much progress as I'd like. I've just started exploring Relations from the OSM data. I've mostly been focused on Multi-Polygon objects that are in the OSM file that Elk entirely misses. Buildings with courtyards won't show up, nor will places like Lake Washington up in Seattle because of the islands (most notably Mercer Island) sitting in the middle of it. These are defined as relationships so it may make sense to add more relationship data since I may already have to read through and handle it anyways.
Height data is definitely a possibility, and I think I have a copy of elk that extracts the height data. I never really spent much time on it because the actual height data appeared to be so sparse. It will be in whatever the next version of Elk is.

Hi Tim,
Many thanks, all great to hear. Looking forward to the next release.
Is Elk an open-source project? I'd love to get involved if this is at all possible.
James
Hello Timothy,
your work is brilliant, thank you very much for giving us this precious component.
I also need very much the multipolygon support, for certain analysis is essential.
I hope you will give us a fresh new version of Elk soon :)
Cheers,
Francesco
hey tim,
thanks for this plugin, really is a nice tool for architects and planners to collect all this data and visualize it in rhino, Hope the next version comes out soon in which we can have the building footprints and then extrude them to their heights.
Hope to see it soon
Thanks again
