Randomized 2D rectangular pattern

Hey everyone, 

Simple question which I'm sure has a simple answer, been trying to create 2d randomized rectangular pattern. As you can see in the attached jpeg. I want to have a fixed height of X with a (controllable) varying width that ranges between Y & Z, all contained within a larger shape. I tried modifying a circle packing script using different shapes to no avail.  Thanks in advanced for any help.

Ok I've gotten further in along in this, Ive gotten the random pattern I was looking for, now I'm not sure how to control the peramiters. Looking to have a max of 20 and a min of 6. Though when inserted int the script all the points thend to stay at the left side.
