It's a bit cumbersome definition, but the point is following - use the random component again to generate deviation values for control points of a straight line (axis of the crystals) . By deviation values, I mean moving a point into a direction perpendicular to the line's axis. Then generate squares on those deviated points, and loft all the squares which belong to that line. Cap the lofted shape:
