Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi David,

I'm using R5 more and more and was wondering if you will include extrusion objects as referenced geometry soon on GH.

Cheers

Hi Evert,

while Grasshopper still needs to run on Rhino4 this cannot happen. I don't know how we'll eventually deal with extrusions, whether it will be another geometry type or whether it will be 'hidden' inside breps.

extrusions objects are great in V5. i was looking for them in rhinoCommon SDK and could not find them. are they included yet?
Hi David,

It would be usefull to have a component in grasshopper that takes both extrusions and surfaces, otherwise we will not taking advantage of extrusion objects on rhino 5.

Cheers

Hi David,

I note this post is 2010, have the extrusions been implemented in ghop yet?

Thanks,

Rob

They have been implemented to the extend that Grasshopper can read extrusion and convert them to Breps. There is no 'real' support for Extrusions yet.

Would also be nice if Grasshopper also converted single face Extrusions to Surfaces. For now I have a user object "Extrusion parameter" that is just a Brep parameter connected to a Srf parameter. Not a huge deal obviously but we do run into this little hiccup quite often on account of me pushing extrusion objects for file size mgmt

Evert,

Can you enlighten me as to what extrusion objects in R5 are?

Hi Taz,

Extrusion objects are lightweight polysurfaces in V5, they use less memory and I think create less polygons for display meshing.

Extrude commands and box are the commands that can use this type. Also you can type _UseExtrusions at the command line and it will let you use extrusion objects or polysurfaces. You can also create a lightweight plane by extruding a line. So far they work transparenetly in Rhino V5 for the most part and you can use the regular selection methods on them or the specialized command _selextrusion

Hey Roland,

Thanks for the info, I must be behind the V5 curve... At least now I'm aware of this newfangled surface type!

Cheers
Yes they are pretty cool, Sorry if you know of this already but did you check out the new named view manager in v5 with the animation option, it stores your views in a thumbnail and if you have the animate option checked when you double click a thumbnail it animates to that view in real time.

i like this feature a lot, you add it to a realtime render VSR and it becomes a decent for quick presentations
Will the V5 wonders ever cease? That is pretty cool. I also like Robert's idea to make quick animations out of it (like Playblast in Maya).

And of course it goes without saying that the Gumball is quite a handy new feature!
